Hazardous area computers, essential equipments for industrial needs

A hazardous area is one wherein the level of flammable gases, dust or vapour is high. Equipment which would be a part of such areas is specially designed so that it is ensured that any spark does not cause explosion. In normal appliances, a harmless small spark occurs when it is switched on and in a normal location this does not cause any problem but in a location wherein flammable gas is present such sparks may cause huge explosion. So that is why extra care is taken while designing and manufacturing equipment for use in refineries, chemical factories, military establishments etc.

There are different ways to provide safety of equipment on site. First of all minimum electrical equipment is used onsite but however hazardous area computers , security alarms, detectors, speakers and other heavy duty equipment have become a must on the location. So care is taken to provide ventilation so that there is access to clean air, thereby making the area less hazardous. Also equipment is designed so that it has low power and energy levels, because then whether functioning or if there is a failure the equipment does not have enough energy to support a blast.

There are different agencies governing hazardous areas and their equipment in different countries. The rules established by them are very stringent as they take into consideration all the precautions required to ensure the safety and security of the employees as well as the factory or area. E.g. if a hazardous area computer has to be designed then it should meet the requirements of these governing bodies and should also be tested by one of them.
